Man in red shorts stands on a beach, facing the turquoise sea under a partly cloudy sky, hands behind his back, creating a serene mood.

Summer days at the beach and afternoons by the pool are meant to be relaxing - but for hearing aid wearers, water, sand, heat, and sunscreen can create unexpected problems. The good news? With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy all your favorite summer activities while keeping your hearing aids safe and working properly.

Are Hearing Aids Waterproof?

Many modern hearing aids are water-resistant, but that does not mean they are waterproof. Even devices with strong moisture protection can still be damaged by direct water exposure, humidity, sweat, chlorine, or saltwater.

Saltwater and chlorinated pool water can be especially harmful because they may corrode delicate internal components over time. Sand and sunscreen can also clog microphones and charging ports.

Taking a few extra steps before heading outside can help prevent costly repairs or replacements.

1. Remove Hearing Aids Before Swimming

This is the most important rule: never swim while wearing your hearing aids unless they are specifically designed for underwater use.

Before jumping into the ocean or pool:

  • Remove your hearing aids

  • Store them safely in a dry protective case

  • Keep the case in a shaded, cool location

Even if you only plan to “dip your feet in,” accidental splashes happen quickly.

2. Keep Them Away From Sand

Sand may seem harmless, but tiny particles can easily enter microphones, receivers, or battery compartments.

At the beach:

  • Avoid placing hearing aids directly on towels or beach chairs

  • Use a hard-shell protective case

  • Handle hearing aids with clean, dry hands

If sand does get inside, avoid blowing into the device. Instead, gently brush it away with a hearing aid cleaning tool or bring them in for professional cleaning.

3. Watch Out for Sunscreen & Lotion

Sunscreen, bug spray, and lotions can clog hearing aid openings and reduce sound quality.

A good routine is:

  • Apply sunscreen or lotion first

  • Let it fully absorb and dry

  • Then insert your hearing aids

This simple habit can help keep microphones and receivers clear.

4. Protect Against Sweat & Humidity

Summer heat often means more perspiration, which can introduce moisture into hearing aids throughout the day.

To reduce moisture buildup:

  • Wipe hearing aids off periodically with a dry cloth

  • Open battery doors at night (if applicable)

  • Use a hearing aid dehumidifier or drying kit overnight

Moisture damage is one of the most common causes of hearing aid repairs, especially during warmer months.

5. Be Careful With Extreme Heat

Leaving hearing aids in direct sunlight or inside a hot car can damage batteries and sensitive electronics.

Never leave hearing aids:

  • On a pool chair in the sun

  • Inside a parked vehicle

  • Near hot windows or outdoor surfaces

Instead, store them in a cool, shaded location when not in use.

6. Use Retention Accessories for Active Days

If you enjoy boating, walking on the beach, paddleboarding, or playing with grandchildren near the water, consider using hearing aid retention clips or sports sleeves.

These accessories can help prevent devices from falling into the water or getting lost in the sand.

7. Clean Your Hearing Aids After Outdoor Activities

After a beach or pool day:

  • Wipe devices down with a dry microfiber cloth

  • Check for moisture or debris

  • Inspect microphones and domes for sand or buildup

  • Place them in a drying container overnight

Routine cleaning helps extend the life of your hearing aids and keeps sound quality clear.

Don’t Ignore Signs of Moisture Damage

If your hearing aids begin to:

  • Sound weak or distorted

  • Cut in and out

  • Produce static

  • Stop charging properly

… moisture may be the cause.

The sooner the issue is addressed, the better the chance of preventing permanent damage.
